Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the foreign minister of India, highlighted the BRICS alliance as a symbol of change. Notably, he subtly conveyed that conventional approaches, including the predominance of the US dollar, are inadequate for navigating the complexities of the current geopolitical landscape.
Jaishankar emphasized,
“Our Gathering Must Send Out a Strong Message That the World Is Multipolar, That It Is Rebalancing and That Old Ways Cannot Address New Situations… We Are a Symbol of Change and Must Act Accordingly”.
Expanding BRICS Membership: A Growing Global Appeal
To note, initially conceptualized as an alternative to the US dollar reserve currency framework, the BRICS alliance has gained considerable momentum in recent years, attracting interest from nations aspiring to join its ranks.
Moreover, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed openness to including Venezuela as a member, while African Ambassador Anil Sooklal confirmed the interest of over a dozen nations from Africa, Latin America, and Asia in becoming new members.
In a related development, the New Development Bank (NDB), established to foster development within BRICS nations, has entered into discussions with Saudi Arabia regarding potential alliance entry. Moreover, this development underlines the growing appeal and influence of the BRICS coalition in the evolving global order.
Furthermore, as the Cape Town summit drew to a close, it became evident that the BRICS alliance is positioning itself as a leading force for global rebalancing and transformation. Even more, with an expanding membership and increasing influence, the coalition is poised to reshape the geopolitical landscape by challenging traditional frameworks and paving the way for a multipolar world order.
